All things considered, the Logitech G933’s are an absolute steal. Everything from the exceptional microphone quality, to the brilliance of the surround sound and the customization of the lighting, this headset is perfect for any gamer in need of an upgrade

I don’t know if you can get a better all-around gaming headset. The G933 can handle gaming easily. Its built-in mic is really clear, so you’re going to have no problem communicating. But it can also break away from your computer to work well with consoles or a smartphone. I love rocking out in my car to My Morning Jacket while wearing G933. I can even take a call using the headset. It just easily handles any situation you throw at it, which I think makes it an incredible value for the price.

By PCworld
The Logitech G933 would be a pretty good headset at its list price of $200. At its pretty-much-permanent sale price of $150 to $180, it’s probably the best price-to-performance ratio you can get for a wireless headset right now.

Detail Review:

INTRODUCTION:

Logitech G933

There are lots of features and most of the new things for gaming in this headset. These all make the headset a great package for this price range, especially for gaming.

Astro A50

This headset is a very premium headset in the gaming world. There ‘s also a lot of many useful features for gaming and also for sound quality. The design and comfort level is also pretty good in this headset.

DESIGN:

Logitech G933

Aesthetics wise, they really are identical. Side-by-side, there’s no obvious way to tell the difference when you have the G633 wires unplugged. I needed to pull the side cap off to determine which one is G933. This is no surprise but it is a positive in my mind. The overall design looks pretty cool and none of this was sacrificed to enable wireless connectivity.

You’ll find the same plush ear cups, same RGB lighting strip, and the same Logitech gaming G logo. The same detailed and decorated headband and the same matching ear cup mesh. There are removable panels on the outside of the ear cups.

On the G633, I believe the removable panels were simply there to allow gamers and sponsored gaming teams to use custom ear cap identifies, the G933 is also afforded this luxury. However, there’s a much more clever design aspect to these ear cups too. Popping both sides off, you’ll discover that one side houses and allows access to the battery, the other side actually contains the USB receiver. It will definitely help prevent traveling gamers from losing the dongle.

For traveling, however, the G933 may not be the best headset. They don’t really fold up at all beyond some ear cups swivels and they do take up a fair bit of space.

Astro A50

There are two versions in this particular headset. One is the Xbox version and the other one is the Playstation version. Xbox version has gray and vibrant green color scheme. The Playstation version has a black and electric blue color scheme. The ear cups and headband have a matte black finish which is nice since it balances out the really shiny plastic blue on the sides.

COMFORT:

Logitech G933

The G933 are comfortable just like the G633 were and they really wrap around the head quite tightly. This is something I noticed more as I use the G633 over time, they really are very comfortable headset. However, I found personally when wearing them over a long period of time, they felt a little too tight and heavy. This is a super-heavy headset considering they are Wireless and I think the firmness of the grip around my head has a lot to do with it, such a thing will certainly come down to personal preference.

Now, most of the people complaining about a problem with their headsets sliding off the back of their heads, I personally never found this to be an issue, and the only way I could recreate it was by positioning the headset quite far back on my head. With the headset in my normal position, they sat nicely. This isn’t the lightest headset going around and if they grouped any tighter than I believe comfort would be a real issue.

There are very few things I disliked about G933. Though it would have personally loved a purpose-built carry case, also I found this is a little too tight on my head for long use. It’s also worth noting that this isn’t the most portable headset and they might be a little too bulky for some.

Astro A50

I find these to be really comfortable. They feel pretty average in weight and the ear cups while plush provides a very nice seal for some immersive gaming. Something to note though is that these ear cups have a cloth-like material around them. So, I could imagine someone complaining about their ears getting hot after a really long gaming session but that hasn’t been my experience.

If the ear cups just don’t work for you, you can always switch them out for the leather ear cups on the $40 mod kit. These ear cups will add some extra noise isolation which is nice but wasn’t really necessary for me, I personally really like the feel to A50 and it’s pretty high in comfort.

FEATURES:

Logitech G933

Probably, the best part of the G933 is their adaptability and features. Whilst they are wireless, they do come with the same connectivity options as the G633 and then some. There’s a USB cable to connect directly to your PC which also charges the battery as well as a standard 3.5-millimeter audio jack with an inline mic and remote, that can be plugged into anything including current-gen console controllers though unfortunately, it will be in a stereo mode, not 7.1 surround. You can also plug this directly into your phone for a hands-free chat.

The final connectivity options quite unique, there’s a 3.5-millimeter audio jack in the back of the USB receiver and included in the package is nicely a 3.5-millimeter cable that you can plug directly into this. With this cable, we connect virtually any input such as your home theater, TV, stereo into your headset wirelessly.

In order to enable and configure the 7.1 surround sound as with the G633, the Logitech Gaming software must be installed. This software is straightforward to install and easy to use and allows you to mess around with sound profiles and lighting effects as you please. The same three programmable GE keys found on the headset too and this can compete with any function in the software also.

Something else I like on the headset is the volume wheel found on the back underneath the G keys. I found this to be very intuitive when I wanted to quickly change the volume and over time, it’s become a real habit. There’s no longer do I look to my keyboard media buttons to change the volume in Windows and now when I wear a different headset, I find myself reaching for the volume wheel that unfortunately isn’t there.

The highlights of the G933 include the excellent and very reliable wireless performance, high build quality, attractive yet functional design, and the wealth of connectivity options and that great sound.

Astro A50

On the right is where you’ll find all your controls like you’re a party and game rocker and that allows you to adjust the balance between the two, a switched to power the headset on and off. There’s also a button for Dolby virtual 7.1 surround sound, a 3-way EQ switch that has software to customize your gaming experience and a dial for volume control. On the left ear cup, we have an adjustable mic that’s able to be raised up, so that it mutes the headset.

There’s also an Xbox version that comes in gray and green. Now, if you happen to own both consoles, instead of having to buy two completely new headsets, all you’ll have to do is buy the base station for the other console and you’ll be able to use your headset between both systems.

I think one of the most notable features about the A50 is just that base station. The base station has a really clean look to it and will most likely have no problem displaying it on a standard size desk or TV stand. Aside from the looks, the dock is actually really useful. When you’re done gaming with the headset, you can simply dock them in and recharge the battery which is super easy since the ear cups also contain magnets that help us stay in place. The station also contains a switch that allows you to use your headset seamlessly on your console or PC. It also contains a battery life display which should help to avoid those situations where you end up hearing that warning beep because you didn’t charge your headset enough. With this, it’s easy to see if the headsets ready for use and just how long you’ve got before you need to put it on the charger.

MICROPHONE:

Logitech G933

The mic found in the G933 is again the same. I’ve used it to record this piece of the audio. It’s a boom mic that folds up into the headset subtly when you want them to look like normal headphones and then folds down easily with an extendable flexible arm.

Like most marks found on premium headsets these days, it’s a noise-cancelling mic and it sounds about as it expects. The best feature in my opinion is the little indicator light on the end that shows you at a glance whether you have the mic muted.

Astro A50

This headset has a flip-up to mute mic like many of the gaming headsets now have that feature. The mic is very long which will be enough to get close to your mouth and that also looks like gaming mic.

For the mic, I’m not really too sure what to think. I got a ton of party chats and everyone said I sounded pretty good but there are tons of people complaining saying the mic sounds like straight-up trash. Even though nobody complained at my parties, I did a couple of recordings. For a 300 dollar gaming headset, I definitely expected more. The A50 also has a noise case setting that allows you to keep the outside noises to a minimum. So, if you’ve got kids running around or some music playing in the back, you don’t have to worry about your party members hearing it. It works pretty well.

BATTERY:

Logitech G933

The Box claims 12-hour battery life and this does seem about right based on my experience using them. Apparently, the use of all of the RGB lighting could affect battery performance by up to 30%. So, I am someone who personally doesn’t really care for having headphones lit up, I probably would simply turn them all off if these are going to be my daily drivers.

The fact that the battery is so easily removable and replaceable is a big bonus and the simplicity of the USB charging cable is great too.

Astro A50

Something that Astro put a lot of effort into here is making it seem like the A50 are always ready to go and that comes in the form of easy charging and some new battery-saving features. The new A50 has an accelerometer which is a really good move. With this, it can detect when the headset is vertical and in use on your head and also when the headset is rested on its sides, and in those moments the headset will turn itself off in about 20 seconds or so. So, imagine you’re in the middle of playing and you want to go make yourself a snack or maybe go answer a call instead of having to go and put these back on the dock, all you have to do is rest them down and they’ll shut off.

The great thing is that when you come back, the headset will turn on and reconnect itself by the time you lift them up and throw them on your head which is honestly really seamless and probably one of the coolest features on A50.

This has a 15-hour battery life and I’ve been able to have some pretty long gaming sessions without having these dire on me. So, with 15-hour battery life, easy charging, and that accelerometer feature, it’s no surprise that these things feel like they’re always ready to be used.

SOUND:

Logitech G933

The sound quality is excellent and immersive as with the G633. There are very clear mids and highs and the bass is punchy. They’re really great for listening to hip-hop and EDM, the sound profile really suits FPS gaming too.

The 7.1 surround sound works very well and you get a real directional stance at all times when the Logitech gaming software is installed and it is enabled. The headset also has the capacity to be very loud, I didn’t find the need to go about 50% volume aside from when testing the audio quality.

Astro A50

I think this sounds great for gaming but not much else. The headset comes with three different EQ modes. There’s the Astro mode that’s tuned to give you precise bass and pretty balanced everything else and these are the settings that Astro has chosen to give you the best audio experience they think is available. Then, there’s also the studio mode, the studio mode has a pretty flat EQ and they intend for people to use this with listening to music and watching movies.

Also, we’ve got the pro mode that’s tuned to give you less bass, so that you can hear things like footsteps and enemies all around you and that’s supposed to help with that surround sound feature. So, if you’re professional and let nobody sneak up on you.

It’s cool to switch between those three settings and honestly I really do like the audio experience you get from these but really just the audio experience for gaming. It’s cool to Astro included a studio mode for listening to music and watching movies but I wasn’t too crazy about the listening experience for music. If you’re looking for a gaming headset that’ll also work as a pair of headphones, I’d say looks somewhere else. I really do like these but at $300 price tag though that is a lot of money especially considering there are cheaper headsets out there like the Logitech G933 that can do an awesome job for about half the price.

astro a50 2 (1)

WHICH TO BUY?

Both these headsets are specially made for gaming. The design and every feature are specially for gaming. So, considering the price and also the number of useful features, I think you should choose Logitech G933 because I don’t think Astro will be worth $300. The features and sound quality and everything are very nice in the Astro A50 but it’s not that much worth for the $300. But, if you’re only into gaming and had a budget of this price range then this will be great for you.
