INTRODUCTION:

Logitech MX Master 2S

The Master series is basically well known for its dynamic productivity, deep button customization, the ability to play up to three devices, incredible precision using darkfield technology, and Logitech’s brilliant software. So, for the price of this mouse is absolutely worth every penny.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

This is more like a travel mouse which is very portable and easy to carry and use. Most of the features are the same as the Logitech MX Master 2S mouse. So, it will be beneficial for those people who travel a lot with their work. 

DESIGN & COMFORT:

Logitech MX Master 2S

If you happen to own an MX Master and design was the reason that you purchased it then you might want to skip on the Master 2S. The build is virtually unchanged. Although it’s still extremely comfortable to hold, great grip all around, and natural operation helps them minimize fatigue when using for long periods of time but this mouse has a whole lot more to offer than the previous-gen and that’s on the software side of things.

We get three new color options available, we have graphite, midnight teal, and light gray. I own light gray model, this consists of beautiful pure white slash gray combo with that stormtrooper look on the bottom with the black mouse feet for a little bit of traction. So, this precious mouse doesn’t get as dirty as you would expect. This plastic finish holds up pretty well, the occasion will wipe down or just simply washing your hands before using it will keep it clean for a long time.

Now as far as the mouse feet go, that’s a different story because dust does tend to build up along the edges after a few days of dragging around the table. Now that doesn’t like affect performance or anything but I just thought that was something to keep in mind when it comes to maintaining your setup.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

From a physical standpoint, it’s held up extremely well. This smooth matte finish on the outside, I was a little bit worried that it would get scuffed up or it would get marked up but it has held up really well aside from keeping it and I am using a soft case for this mouse. Other than that, I’ve taken no special precautions to protect this Mouse and the exterior has held up very well.

The buttons are still as clicky which is really nice but it still has the little rattle noise from the middle button. Aside from that there’s a very slight swelling on the rubber on the exterior there from hand probably just holding it and being sweaty and all the heat but it’s very minor and it looks like that’s not going to be any kind of issue. Pads on the bottom also when I got it out of the box were pretty scuffed up and I was worried that they were just gonna deteriorate over time but a sense that initial unboxing, it’s really not changed all that much, it looks pretty much the same.

One thing about my road-tested series is it’s not just about the physical durability of a product but also its usability over time. When it comes to the usability of the MX Anywhere 2S mouse, I noticed that a lot of my small gripes have gotten smaller and all the things that I like about this mouse have gotten better.

This is not a mouse that you would want to use every day, particularly if you have larger hands. It is a travel mouse and it’s designed to be more portable. It’s not as ergonomic as the MX Master series or other larger mouse that Logitech makes or other manufacturers make. If you got larger hands, you’re gonna want to get something that’s more ergonomic. If you have smaller hands, you could probably use this as a daily usable mouse and it’s not gonna be too bad but as far as travel goes and portability goes, this is an excellent travel mouse.

FEATURES & PERFORMANCE:

Logitech MX Master 2S

This mouse is work plug and play right out the box, you simply just flip the on the switch and you’re then greeted with the battery life indicated via three LED lights. One LED would indicate that it needs to be charged. Now, you have two ways to connect this mouse. Either through its classic unifying receiver which I find to be the easier option or if you don’t have any USB ports on your machine, then you can either opt to use a Bluetooth connection instead. Now, both options offer reliable connectivity, I didn’t spot any differences in range.

Logitech advertises a wireless range of 10 meters or 33 feet but out so getting more like 25 feet, I guess it really just depends on the obstacles in your space but coming right in front of the computer anyway, so to me, this doesn’t even matter.

As far as precision goes just like the original MX Master, the 2S uses darkfield technology and this basically allows you to track on just about basically anything you can think of but the 2S does give you much better precision maxing out at 4,000 DPI over the previous 1600 dpi limitation. It means that is just a lot more sensitive and it reacts better to micro-movements of your hand which is more than welcomed

Exploring the buttons, we have this nicely textured scroll wheel with silver chamfered edges. This is present on all colors by the way but I think it just complements this light gray color a whole lot better. It’s also clickable where you can assign it to any action you want and you’ll also find this same chamfered accent on the side scroll wheel as well. Now, just behind it are two customizable back and forward buttons for webpage navigation. Now, I wish they were a little more symmetrical and just overall bigger, I always accidentally ended up pressing one over the other and they’re pretty sensitive to the touch too, a lot of accidents who presses upon gripping the mouse just a minor complaint for me.

Now, it may not be as obvious if you’re new to this mouse but the entire surface where your thumb rests, it’s actually a clickable button which by default launches Mission Control on Mac OS or task view in Windows 10 and I leave that setting just how it is, I think is an intuitive gesture and it just makes a lot of sense for the command. Up top, we have the small button called the mode shift which you by default upon a single click, it lets you switch between ratchets scroll to a more precision or free spin scroll for smoother and faster scrolling through long webpages. I personally enjoy using free spin unless otherwise it’s called for.

I love this mouse, very flexible, and personalized to really make this your master mouse. So, the original MX Master was able to do all that and that’s where the similarities end between these two mice. With the Master 2S showing off a powerful feature called Logitech Flow. So, Logitech flow allows you to copy and paste files of any size directly to and from completely separate computers between Mac and PC, simply by dragging your cursor to the edge of the screen and then pacing on the other machine. This is the most innovative thing I’ve seen in a very long time.

Now, There’s about a 1/2 a second delay when moving the cursor at a different machine and that’s because there really isn’t anything magical going on. Basically, all this doing is that when it reaches the edge of the screen, it switches to the number 2 input for the other machine. So, the computer picks it up immediately and it does this so seamlessly, you hardly notice the slight pause that it does have this kind of wow effect.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

The precision 4000 DPI on this mouse is really smooth and really excellent to use. The mouse though is doing really well and again, the DPI is very smooth on all sorts of surfaces. So, if you’re traveling and this is really travel or a portable mouse, it works on glass and that has come in super handy. You can even us this without a mousepad or with a mouse pad, it’s just done a great job. It never loses the mouse pointer which is great, so it’s an excellent travel mouse in that regard.

I love the infinite scroll feature which I find myself using a lot which is this wheel in the middle if you’ve set that infinite scroll mode, just by clicking down, you just kind of let it roll it will just keep rolling. You can just scroll down web pages really fast if you’re doing Photoshop, even if your video editing there’s sort of a nice kind of momentum to it. I end up using that a lot, I almost never use the other side of the scroll wheel which is the clicky feature which if you push down, it’s gonna have this click mode where you get a more broken up scrolling experience but I use the infinite scroll a lot.

You do have the button on the top which you can map to other functions here which you can use as an alternative but it’s not going to be quite as good because it’s further up on the mouse. So, it’s not gonna be as comfortable to move your finger all the way back from the scroll wheel if you use that feature a lot.

One thing I have started doing with this mouse is turning it off completely when I’m not using it for long periods of time like overnight to increase the longevity. You might want to try that as well if you want to extend the longevity of the battery in this Mouse for as long as possible.

Aside from that physically, it still does have a little bit of a connectivity issue in very specific cases and specifically, I mean when my laptop goes to sleep and then it wakes back up and Bluetooth is on and I left my mouse on, so the Bluetooth is running they were both connected. So, if the laptop goes to sleep mode from that the connecvtivity issue starts. After that, you need to turn on and off Bluetooth on both the devices then it will work well. So that happens about every one out of four times and it’s just a little bit inconvenient and annoying. I’ve heard complaints about this from people using Windows and Linux as well so it seems to be something on the mouse side rather than something on the laptop operating system side.

BATTERY:

Logitech MX Master 2S

The battery life is been upgraded from an estimated 40-day battery life to 70-day battery life. I don’t think, it’s anything that you have to worry about. You can expect roughly around like a two hour and change charging window, although charging all the way from dead might take a little bit longer. Also, you can also use this mouse wireless charging just like a traditional mouse.

This mouse still uses the outdated micro-USB port for charging and it would have been nice to see USB-C since that is the direction that mobile tech has been at for a while.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

The battery life has been absolutely excellent. I like not carrying extra batteries for my tech products, I like it it’s easier when I’m traveling. Over time, the battery life for the MX Anywhere 2S mouse has been excellent, I get at least a month of continuous use, I mean that’s like eight hours of heavy use.

It only takes about a minute to charge it up to an hour. So, if you’re really in a hurry, you can just plug it in for a minute get an hour of battery use, and then keep going.

Another nice thing is you can still charge this and use it at the same time, so just plug it into USB and then keep using it and do two things at the same time. So that when you’re done working, your battery is gonna be mostly charged. It does charge over micro-USB and I really wish it was USB-C but it’s not a deal-breaker. There is an indicator on the top which is a green light and it’s supposed to flash yellow when the battery is getting low and dying and then just go to red when it’s really critical.

After the use of the first time, it directly shows red light without any alarming yellow light. If it turns out red that pretty much means, you’ve got five or ten minutes to use the battery, and then it’s dead. So, there are no other secure alarms between the green and red lighting alerts. If you’re in a home, it will not be a big issue and you just plug it in very easily but if you’re traveling and that’s gonna be something that might be a little bit inconvenient, so you might just want to top off the battery before you go on a long flight.

SOFTWARE:

Logitech MX Master 2S

Now, you can adjust the speed from the Logitech options software. I’ve never had any issues when it came to tracking even on the previous-gen model nor that I ever feel the need to have to adjust the pointer speed dramatically during any given scenario.

Now, if you like from the Logitech options utility, you can go ahead and enable the smart shift option and what this does is, it automatically switched between ratchet and free spin depending on how fast you’re spinning the wheel. Now, by disabling smart shift and assigning the mode shift to none, you activate the fixed mode and this locks your scroll into either free spin or ratchet mode. The choice is completely up to you, I personally prefer neither option and rather have manual control over that.

You can customize every single button on the mouse to behave differently depending on which application is open. This is a strong dynamic feature here, this works for the original MX Master as well and you can really spend hours customizing this until your heart’s consent. For all applications, the thumb pad remains set submission control across all apps, my scroll wheel is actually set to capture a screenshot upon a single click no matter which app is open because I tend to use screenshots quite a lot.

I went ahead and remap the dissenter mode shift button to open launchpad and then when I switch over to Final Cut Pro I have that same button launch finder for quick dragging and dropping files for when I’m editing but when I’m inside Google Chrome, it defaults back to the mode shift scroll function. Now, the side scroll I have that set to tab between my open programs for all applications except when I’m inside Google Chrome, it switches between my browser tabs instead for those moments when I have 10 to 15 tabs open. These all are great shortcuts I have for any user and then when I’m in Final Cut Pro, it changes, and that allows me to horizontally scroll through my timeline.

To set the flow feature is easy, just make sure that the Master 2S is paired. The Logitech software is installed on each additional machine with the flow option enabled and that all machines are on the same Wi-Fi network. It’s essentially Wi-Fi sharing, so you can imagine that the speeds will vary on a bunch of different factors.

Now, you can also set the screen arrangement vertical or horizontal depending on where the separate computers are placed physically. Basically, this is like wirelessly adding a third monitor to your existing two-monitor setup. I recommend selecting the hold control option to engage flow, this way there isn’t any accident to mouse movement causing you to wonder where’s your cursor.

Logitech MX Anywhere 2S

The wheel doesn’t have a click and you can’t map it through the software. It basically has only two functions infinite scroll or the clicking scroll but it doesn’t work as a clicking button.

You do have two buttons there on the side by your thumb which can be mapped. I found myself almost never using those, I just use the infinite scroll. I don’t use those buttons pretty much for anything if you game a lot maybe or you do a lot of photoshop or you map a lot of functions into your mouse, that might be useful for you. With the Anywhere 2S mouse, you’ve got the flow technology where you can use two screens with one mouse which is really useful. You can set this flow feature from the Logitech options software.

You can also go into the Logitech software that comes with this mouse and see how much battery life is left but it only gives you three-bar indicators, there’s no percentage on how much battery life you have. So, you can’t get really good accurate readings of how much battery life is left but with such a long battery life in such a short charging time, it’s not really a huge deal.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both the mouse are works very well but it will suit some kind of people. In my opinion, the MX Master 2S works well and better than Anywhere 2S but if you travel a lot and want a mouse that can be easily portable then Anywhere 2S is also equally nice and has 95% features the Master 2S has and I will say it could be better to choose which one is comfortable for your hand. You can get one of these mice if you really want many customizations in terms of buttons and functionality.
