INTRODUCTION:

Logitech MX Vertical Mouse

The design and the idea of this ergonomic of the mouse are very new and different. This design will be very beneficial but it takes some time to get used to that design.

This is a mouse with a trackball that doesn’t have an optical or laser sensor at the bottom. Now, Logitech is bringing this kind of ergonomic design back with the trackball as the main kind of cursor controller for your operating system.

DESIGN & COMFORT:

Logitech’s first vertical mouse. Now, the idea behind vertical mice that have been around for 20 years now is to maximize comfort and avoid carpal tunnel syndrome and other repetitive strain injuries that can be caused by lying your hand flat for long periods of time. Now, the MX Vertical design mitigates by putting your hand in more of a natural handshake position of 57 degrees which is higher than the MX Ergo optional tilt but still less than the 90 degrees which in theory would give you enhanced position. Then, it would also introduce new problems because instead of driving mouse clicks down towards the desk, they’d be going sideways where there’s nothing to push against.

One thing we expect to be agreeable to everyone though is the MX vertical looks. Despite Logitech’s obvious focus on ergonomics, the mouse itself still manages to look frankly like a work of art. it looks like a seashell but even seemingly design-focused decisions here, often have practical elements to them. So, for example, the soft-touch rubber top is accented with the vertical ribs that play with the light more than the graphite color but also give it a pleasing grippy texture in the hand, so you can’t accidentally slip.

It’s actually quite a large overall mouse design. It’s specifically designed, so you can rest your entire palm on it and it’s accommodating to all different hand sizes which are small to large and I think for most people resting your palm on the mouse feels relatively comfortable. You’re going to notice that it is only a right-handed design. There is an Ambidextrous trackball mouse out there but this sadly isn’t one of them. Now, the bottom of the MX Ergo is a magnetic base plate that allows you to actually tilt the mouse 20 degrees to of the right side. I personally like the more parallel design to the floor, it actually feels a lot more comfortable than the 20 degrees tilted but some people might like that option.

Now, you can actually take off the magnetic base plate entirely and there’s a little hole where you can pop out the trackball using a pen and here you can get access to cleaning the trackball itself as well as any kind of dust that gets caught underneath where the trackball sensors are located.

When it comes to actually use the trackball as your primary cursor movements, it takes a little bit of time. You’re gonna have to fiddle around with these sensitivity settings but after a couple of hours of usage, you’re definitely gonna get the hang of it. For example, if you want to travel large distances with your cursor movement, you can just quickly spin the ball to the region that you want to go to and you’ll get there very quickly and efficiently.

Once your thumb adapts to the whole cursor movement with the trackball, I think it’s going to feel very intuitive. Even though there may be some arguments of using the trackball opposed to a conventional mouse when it comes to reducing the likelihood of carpal tunnel syndrome or even some kind of tendinitis, generally it’s gonna vary from person to person and whatever feels more comfortable.

This is quite a bit weirder and there’s definitely a bit of a learning curve before you can point with the degree of accuracy that you’re probably used to because you have to learn to move your arm on a totally different axis. Now, on a normal mouse, most of us execute big movements by pivoting from the elbow or from the shoulder and then fine movements by moving the wrist sideways but while this does offer a lot of precision, it’s actually an unhealthy movement with another fancy name but with the vertical, you actually do your fine movements which becomes second nature after a week or two except for an unexpected problem.

It may also give you some fake clicks where you go to click on something and nothing happens, causing you to have to click again. It took some time to get used to this mouse. If you have much practice using horizontal like regular mice and that this could be a complete non-issue over time.

Even though the MX vertical is lightweight and advertised as having the elevated performance of the MX series and even though it has forward and back buttons a dpi selector that goes up to 4000 dpi and left and right buttons that are rated to 10 million clicks, it still feels like it got a little shafted in terms of features compared to its other mouses. The vertical has the fewest programmable buttons. It lacks a horizontal scroll wheel, and gesture control, and darkfield tracking for use on highly reflective surfaces.

It is expensive but it’s a high-quality right-handed mouse with modern Logitech benefits like dual connectivity via radio and Bluetooth, flow across multiple machines, and this new graphical DPI selector.

When it comes to the button and control layout, the MX Ergo is actually quite simple and straightforward, you have primary left and right-click buttons, a clicky kind of scroll wheel that has left and right movement capabilities, there’s a center button which allows you to toggle between the Bluetooth wireless connectivity, and the standard a 2.4 gigahertz USB a dongle that comes with the mouse. Since your thumb is going to be really busy in moving the trackball around for your cursor movement, you actually can see that the forward and back buttons are located more at the front of the mouse specifically going to be used by your index finger and once you get accustomed to moving of the trackball around with the thumb, this really makes a lot of intuitive sense and it’s pretty easy to adjust to.

There is a precision mode button just located on top of the trackball itself and this basically downshifts the DPI or sensitivity. So, you can get more precise with your movements and you can obviously control all of the sensitivity parameters of the trackball itself and the button program ability in the Logitech software itself as you would expect. Things are pretty simple and straightforward when it comes to connectivity and control.

Furthermore, there is a software feature called flow which allows you to unify multiple different and machines with the MX Ergo. There’s about a second a delay from PC to PC but keep in mind, it’s going from a Bluetooth connection to the wireless dongle connection and it’s also both computers need to be on the same network as well but it’s a pretty cool feature, especially for multiple computer devices different operating systems.

One serious limitation is definitely going to be from a gaming perspective. This is certainly not designed for any kind of hardcore first-person shooter or really any kind of gaming platform. Some people may choose to a game with a trackball and they actually prefer it compared to a regular mouse but for 95% of the major gaming population, they’re going to go for a specific gaming mouse. One of the drawbacks, this is not an ambidextrous mouse, it’s only designed for right-handed users, and for fans of Logitech gaming mice, there’s at the G502 or the G903, this doesn’t have the hybrid scrolling wheel. There is only one single mode for the scrolling option which is kind of a click to click.

Other than ergonomics, the only thing about this mouse that makes it stand out against the others in the lineup is the fact that it uses USB type-c. So, you get the reversibility and the improvements to durability, it will be handy to be able to use the same cable to charge your laptop, your Android phone, and your mouse. The battery life will come to 4 months approximately on a single full charge.

Another big highlight of the mouse is the battery life because there’s no optical or laser sensor, it’s going to be very powerful. Logitech actually claims over three months of usage off of a single charge. It is a wireless device that is an awesome benefit.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both the mouse is different in features and mainly in design but the price is quite similar. To decide which one will be better for you, you should know that from which mouse you will feel comfortable. Both the mouse is comfortable and great to use.

The Logitech MX Vertical is a great mouse if you spend most of your computer time coding or working on documents.
