This is the review of the comparison between two microphones from two different brands such as the Blue and the Samson. The comparison here is between the Blue Yeti X and the Samson G-Track Pro. INTRODUCTION:

Blue Yeti X

The Blue Yeti X is the newest product from the blue microphone. Blue Yeti X currently retails for about $169.99. It only comes in the black option. They do have a world of warcraft version which has gold instead of silver around the trims. The blue microphone is really gearing this Yeti X towards YouTubers, content creators, streamers, and, then people into podcasting. You also get the desktop stand included with the packaging as well as a USB cable. You do have an A2 micro USB. 

Samson G Track Pro

The G Track Pro is a USB microphone and it’s worth $129.99. It’s good for podcasters, dreamers, songwriters, and, content creators. Any microphone can really work for anyone but not all the microphones are good. This one does a one-inch condenser capsule. It has all in one USB microphone. It has cardioid, bi-directional, and, omnidirectional pickup patterns. It has a 24-bit rate. It has a 96k low hertz resolution. It has Quarter-inch instrument input for connecting guitars and a 1/8 inch stereo headphone output.

DESIGN: 

Blue Yeti X

Blue Yeti X is available in Black and silver design. It has a sharper and taller meh section hiding 4 condenser capsules. There is a smart knob with 11 LEDs around it and there’s a lot you can do with this. The first thing you will notice that it does have live metering, so if you talk if you start to talk loud towards the mic it’s going to go from green to yellow to red and when you get to that red or really even into that late yellow stages that’s when you might want to consider turning the mic gain down because you might get some audio distortion and some clipping.

Samson G Track Pro

Samson G Track Pro is very wide, at the top it’s all-metal. The entire device is heavy metal. Moving to the sides there you will see the mount right there just sort of loosely floats inside of it. In the bottom right there it has a foam pad on it and it seems to be made out of a very thick zinc alloy. A little closer down there at the bottom where it connects and you can turn it all the way around inside itself.

On the back, you just flip it on or off, and what that does is, that switches the direct monitor on and off which is if you have a direct line in there if you’re live listening to what’s being spoken to through there. You have your 3.5-millimeter headphone and right there as well as your 1/4 mono instrument input for connecting instruments like an electric guitar or whatever you have. So that really covers all of the switches and buttons on this device.

They do have a four capsule condenser array inside the actual microphone there. So, that’s gonna allow you to get much more focused patterns and actually record at a 24-bit depth or sample rate when you’re actually recording audio using the Yeti X. It is good to note that when you are using the microphone, you actually want to use it at a side angle here some people think you want to talk directly into the top that is not how you should do it, you should talk directly into the side of it.

The nice thing about this is you can actually change the mic gain on the fly without ever having to touch any recording. As you turn mic gain down, due to lower gain you will barely able to hear the sound but when you will turn it up you will be able to hear the sound better. So depending on the situation you’re in you’ll be able to adjust the mic gain just making the mic more or less sensitive. If you’re gonna be using this mic on camera a lot you’re gonna obviously want it to look nice. It was a little disappointing that there’s no USB C there, but not too big of a deal.

The microphone also has a feature to plug in headphones so you can actually hear yourself through the microphone. The microphone actually has features for that, so if you press and hold the smart button for about one second you can adjust the actual headphone level the volume that is going to be produced through whatever headphones you’re wearing. In addition to that if you press the knob just one time don’t hold it down for one second just quickly press it once you’ll be able to actually mute the mic and if you press and hold down the smart knob again for about one second you can get to a blend mode and the blend mode allows you to actually adjust the computer audio versus the microphone audio that you hear through headphones if you have it plugged into. So in summary with the smart knob there you can switch between gain headphone levels and blend modes and it also features live metering to see how sensitive your voice is.

One thing to note that if you do plan to use this on a desk and you plan to use the desktop stand that it comes with, you have to be careful that you don’t touch the desk or that if you do touch the desk or anything that it’s sitting on you do so quietly and the reason for that is because if you do touch the desk or if you move your hand around there’s going to be feedback in the mic. It’ll depend on what your gain is but you might want to look into something like a shock mount or some sort of microphone stand that you don’t have to actually have the yeti sitting on a desk for that’ll really help reduce kind of that desk noise.

Samson G Track Pro

Inside the box, you get the structure manual which has a very nice quality. You get the microphone which comes folded upside down for easy transportation. You get the power cord there which you have to plug in at the bottom and just line it up and it is very easy and then you can turn it down. You also get an adapter, if you don’t want to use the heavy stand you can unscrew it and you can put this microphone on different kinds of stance with this heavy piece of moto right there for instance if you’re gonna put it on an arm and have it hang over you.

It has everything you need right there and a very nice heavy package your are gonna get the scale-out. The weight of the microphone is 3.733 pounds. So the first thing you will have to do is just connect it to the computer so you can see the LED turn on. At the top, you will see the green LED right there when you press the mute button in you will see the light changes to orange showing you that you have the device muted right there.

The first switch you will see there is the microphone switch dial that is used to control or adjust the sensitivity of the internal microphone. As you go down a little bit lower you have the instrument dial right there, which is used to control the input level of the instrument input, whatever you have plugged into the back of it. Then down there at the bottom, you have the volume dial which is used to control the overall volume of the 1/8 inch headphone output, which is on the back of the device.

So that’s really it for the front of this device except for the dials at the top with the difference between mono and two-track being that mono sends the input and instrument input mixed together as one mono signal, while the two-track sends the microphone input and instrument input separately. So it’s just a pendulum if you want more control over the audio you’re using it and if you’re even using an instrument with this device if you’re just using this for voiceovers and nothing else you’d keep it on mono basically.

PERFORMANCE:

Blue Yeti X

This microphone also features four polar patterns. The first one the one which is used the most is the cardioid pattern. Cardioid mode is well suited to podcasting, game streaming, skype calls, vocals, and, instruments. Cardioid mode captures sound sources that are directly in front of the microphone. It delivers a rich, full-bodied sound. So, it is really good for the people who are just talking directly into the mic just one person talking toward the Yeti X, it cancels out all the audio to the sides of it and behind it and just picks up anything that is directly in front of the microphone itself.

Next is Omni mode and this actually picks up sound all around the actual microphone itself. So basically, 360 degrees of sound will be picked up so maybe if you’re recording some music or on a conference call or something like that Omni mode might be best for you depending on how many people and the audio you’re trying to pick up. And again they are marketing this toward content creators, YouTubers, streamers, podcasting, and, musical instruments. They also are marketing this to be used with like guitars and drums, so it’s gonna be really good at picking up that type of audio as well.

The next mode they have here is the bi-directional mode, this mode records from both the front and the rear of the microphone. It is ideal for recording or streaming interviews between two people and what this is going to do is pick up audio both in the front of the mic as well as behind it. So if you have two people sitting face to face with each other may be having just a conference call conversation or if you have a guest on a podcast you’re that’s the mode you’re going to want to use because it’s going to pick up anything that the person is saying toward the mic on either side of it.

The last mode here gets a bit confusing this is called stereo mode and this actually picks up both the left and right channels of the microphone itself so if there’s a lot of sound coming in the front of the mic and you don’t necessarily want to pick it up and it is ideal for capturing a realistic sound image when there are multiple sound sources in front of the mic, a stereo mode might be something you want to keep it in. Overall it’s just really nice to have all these modes they are also easily changeable with the back of the mic by just pressing a button they have LED indicators on there to tell you which mode or which pattern you’re using on the Yeti X.

Some of the software that you can download on your computer and kind of customize this mic to your liking. It is actually something different than you get with something like the yeti line of blue microphones that they offer. So you can actually download something called blue voice or download the Logitech G hub software from Logitech and you’ll be actually able to control a lot of different presets with this Yeti X microphone. So, if you enable blue voice on the Logitech G hub app you can actually set different presets on here and some of those presets are like FM station or AM station you can have crisp and modern. Basically what these are going to do is just change the way your voice actually sounds when you’re talking through the mic so if for some reason you’re filming something and you want to get more of like an AM radio broadcaster sound you can set that preset.  It was kind of fun to play around with but depending on what your use case is for this mic you might not ever end up using it but the option is there if you want to set those presets.

The nice thing about the blue voice is they do offer advanced tuning so you can actually get into the EQ settings and adjust your lows, mids, and, highs. In addition to that, you can also adjust all of the LED colors through the Logitech G hub as well so if you’re going to be using this on twitch and maybe you want to match colors for whatever your streaming colors are you’ll be able to do that. In addition to that if you’re colorblind you can change up the LEDs, so you can properly see things better.

Samson G Track Pro

The cardioid pickup pattern is most sensitive to sound coming from directly in front of the mice while rejecting sound coming from behind the mic. This is great for streaming, podcasting to vocal performances. The omnidirectional pick up sound equally from all the directions- in front of the mic, behind the mic, off to the sides, etc. This pattern is great for recording a number of people around a single microphone, like a multi-person podcast. Figure 8 or Bidirectional pickup pattern picks up sound directly in front and back of the mic while rejecting the sound on the left and right sides. This setting can be used for capturing two performers singing a duet or a cross-table interview. These are the different patterns you can choose right therefor depending on your use case and it tells you what it’s best for right there.

Figure-eight on the far left, you’ll hear from there it’ll pick up audio from but it’ll try to reject audio from the two sides. The cardioid function which is the middle dial right there you’ll only get audio from one side nothing from other sides, theoretically at least. Then on the far right, you have the Omni, so it’ll pick up audio from all the sides to sum it up. Basically,  you will use figure 8 if you have a person speaking from two sides, you will use omnidirectional if you have people speaking from all over the room, and, you’ll use cardioid if you’re recording audio from directly in front of the mic.

If you want to connect it to a computer, go to System Preferences open up the sound tab, and make sure it’s on input and not output, and then you have to switch the Sampson G Trac pro right there. So once you do that you will have to open up your audacity, if you had audacity open already you’re going to want to force quit it and open it again otherwise it won’t read the new microphone selection and press ok and at the top built-in microphone you will have to switch to Samson G track Pro and you can actually start recording.

WHICH TO BUY?

Blue Yeti X is definitely not a cheap microphone. A $170 USB microphone but it’s going to give you much better audio than something like an internal camera mic or a computer mic or something like that but is it worth 170 bucks it really depends on what you’re going to use it for. There are four condensers in this one and this one also records at a 24-bit rate. So it really kind of depends on what your budget is if you can afford the $170 dollars and you feel like you need those features this is what you should go for.

Samson G Track Pro is really a fantastic microphone it is a little pricey at $130 but you really do get what you pay for. The audio recorded on audacity does sound very crisp very beautiful. Overall the crispness sounded good it picked up the clarity very good. There are a lot of different settings there that will let you get really exactly what you want. You can use this for a single person, a dual conversation, an entire room, you can hook up your instruments to it. It’s very good quality. It has a pretty good warranty on it. So, if your budget is low then go for Samson G Track Pro
