INTRODUCTION:

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2

Sennheiser is a brand that has sound in its DNA, it’s all for audio files and these earphones are no different. They’re also a little pricey at all mode right under $300 that is $299.95. These are premium true wireless earphones with a focus on sound quality.

Sony WF-1000XM3

The sony WF-1000XM3 are amazing active noise-canceling headphones. These are retailing for around $230. These really have nice stylish looks.

DESIGN:

The case is the element that you see most often before anything else. Overall the design of this case is a bit big and bulky. Especially, when you put it side-by-side with the Jabra Elites 75t and their Google Pixel Buds 2 definitely it’s a little bit larger there. That just means that it may be a little less pocketable. It’s still pretty small but portability wise these take up just a tad more space and that does get a little annoying but the fabric soft touch to the case is pretty nice. Definitely soften things out maybe that’s a concession that they made over to make up for the bulky size.

On the back is a USB-C port and you have a button next to it, you can push this little button there to see how much charge that the case has, there’s a little LED right next to it that lights up green are full, yellow is halfway, red is around empty. So, it gives you a sense when you unplug it from the USB to see where you’re at. 

The case itself has a nice snap to it. Sometimes these cases don’t snap open or close and that may sound like a small thing but when you’re trying to put those earphones inside, you want that case to stay open, you want things to be firm and this case definitely does that.

The earbuds themselves don’t always snap into place on the first try. There’s a magnet system is there but something like though the holes are very recessed you have to fit those earbuds in there just right. It’s a niggling complaint, but it is something to consider. I couldn’t just drop it in there and be confident that it was charging. I had to just kind of make sure, it fit in quite right. There is no wireless charging on this case. At this price point if it has the wireless charging then it may be great, but it’s not a deal-breaker by any stretch most of these cases don’t seem to have wireless charging anyways.

Comparing it to the other earphones that I have, these are much larger when compared to the Google pixel buds 2. I’d say slightly larger than the Jabra Elites 75t though the hard edges on the Sennheiser momentum earphones kind of make it seems a little bit larger than it. Actually they’re really close but the 75t have a nice roundness that makes them just kind of feel a little nicer, a little bit more inviting than that have those hard edges.

Inside are seven-millimeter dynamic drivers and they have capacitive touch surfaces on both earbuds and that’s for touch controls. I love that these are capacitive when I only have to tap the surface and I get my command. It’s so much better than having to push like a mechanical button that ends up just jamming the thing into the ear. The microphone is on the right side earbud only and these earbuds are ipx4 rated which means they can resist water splashes.

Sony WF-1000XM3

These got the blackened copper-like tone looking stylish here. It’s made up of hard plastics with nice narrow edges and rubber or silicone grips right where your ear touches the earphones. This is pretty much situational but the WF-1000XM3s don’t have any water resistance. I personally like grabbing my earphones and wearing them during the day later grab those same earphones for the gym, I basically can’t do it here. So, these are more so designed for at home, at work, and in transit. Depending on your lifestyle, these could work perfectly fine for your need.

COMFORT:

As far as fit, like earphones of this type, it is the type that slides into the ear canal, and then you actually twist it to lock it into place. You do get four total ear tip sizes from small to extra-large, so hopefully, you can find one that fits. Mine fit right out of the box, I did not have to try any of the other ones. They just fit right in there but you do have to be okay with that sealed in quality of this particular type of earbud and that will turn some people off.

I like it, that it provides a little bit of extra isolation and I like that it locks into my ear, it doesn’t feel like it’s just resting there, but some people really hate it and this is definitely that type of earbud. Personally I feel like they felt great in my ear, it also stayed in place. I went running with these earphones, I did some workouts with these earphones, definitely moving around, I didn’t have to worry about them falling out or jostling out.

Sony WF-1000XM3

These earphones are stable somewhat similar to the Klipsch T5, where they were mostly dependent on the ear tips to keep them in place, somehow is similar but also somewhat reliant on the bottom of the earbud right there is where the only two points of physical contact are made. The very front area doesn’t touch my face at all.

During my shake testing, they have never gone out of my ears, and for the most part for most normal actions or walking and such, they worked fine. It was only when I’m going up and downstairs where these Sony slightly loses its seal and I would have to press them back in. It’s rare but being transparent it does happen. They are in-ear earphones and for me, they didn’t feel uncomfortable when I was pressing them into the ear.

FEATURES:

These earbuds have tap controls, that you just tap on the surface and it does things and I have to say it works really well. One tap on the right side actually fires off the assistant. Here you don’t get a lot of confirmation. I’ll tap it and then I’m waiting to hear but I didn’t or something that’s gonna tell me that the assistant is listening and I don’t get it. So, I never know when to actually speak and then I speak and I don’t get a response, it’s really kind of confusing. So, I did not like using assistant with these.

Two taps on the right activate a transparent hearing that lets in the outside world a bit. It activates the microphone to kind of let outside the world of your headphones in. It’s subtle but it did the trick. Three taps to activate active noise-canceling. It’s much like what you get on Airpods Pro and it works fantastically well.

When you use the active noise cancellation with the sealed-in design of the earphones, you really get a nice tight sound that is blocked off from the world. So, you probably don’t want to run this mode, if you’re outgoing for a jog, that sort of thing you want to be aware, but if you’re at home in a noisy environment, you want to block out some fan noise or something like that, this is the mode to use.

One complaint I do have with mono listening. On the Google Pixel Buds 2, I can use either bud in mono mode and I can listen with my left ear or my right ear, I can share the earbuds if I really wanted to, and two different people could listen. With these mono listening only happens with the right earbud, that means that the left earbud is not connecting to the phone, it’s connecting to the right earbud and it’s kind of a tandem sort of thing. So, that is a little bit of a bummer, it’s not all independent like it is on the pixel buds 2.

There is an app, a companion app that you can download. I got it from the Play Store. It has a couple of handy features has an EQ that you can use to shape the sound, even further also features like a smart pause for when you remove an earbud from the ear, it’ll pause it automatically and start it back up when you put it back in. You also get a feature called sidetone that actually lets you hear your voice while you’re in the middle of a phone call which is neat. Finally, you have full customization options for the functions of the tap controls, so if you want to change that up you don’t like the layout, Sennheiser has given you the ability to change that up any which way you like.

Sony WF-1000XM3

These have touch controls, I love them. They’re simple, sensitive enough, and easy to access, unlike physical buttons where I have to press them into my ear. Some of the actions you can perform and they’re customizable within the Sony app. The only thing missing which really lets me down here is no volume controls. Some competitors simply offer you to hold down either side and the volume can adjust and you don’t get that option here which means I have to whip out my phone for that purpose.

You can have your environment play through your 1000XM3 either by gently holding this left earbud, it kicks on and as soon as you release it, it shuts off or the other option to hear what there goes give it a tap there and ambient sound kicks on, allowing you to hear your environment. With my testing, it sounds really natural for the most part just a little amplified, but I don’t mind it for safety and awareness.

These have Auto pause, take any one of these earphones out and your music stops you put them back into your ear, and then it basically resumes. It worked flawlessly. Sony claims these earphones are independent. Most truly wireless earphones play through the right ear and then the signal gets transferred to the left ear, but with a 1000XM3 each earphone is connected to your phone helping to create a much more stable connection.

These have Bluetooth 5.0. I didn’t have any syncing delays with YouTube or Netflix on my Android phone. With my iPhone that is I only notice a slight delay, if I really scrutinize while watching YouTube, Netflix was perfectly fine. You do have the ability to listen to either earphone in your ear. General Bluetooth stability has been good, but being transparent here again of course once in a while though I hear a little static. Since their flagship headphones don’t offer this but with these, it’s a huge perk, you can actually pair to two devices at the same time.

I’m a little bit shocked by this although we have Bluetooth 5.0 what we don’t have is the Sony created LDAC. LDAC is the best wireless transmission, it transfers the most data possible, but in this case, the WF-1000x only has SBC and AAC. If you’re buying or streaming high-quality stuff, these earphones don’t take advantage of it. You won’t get bad audio, but it could just be a little bit better.

Starting at the very top of the app, you can see your battery level indicator, there the earphones themselves also have a voice prompt indicating your battery level as well which is awesome. As soon as you put the earbud into your ears, there’s adaptive sound control when on it changes your ambient sound based on either whenever you’re sitting, walking, running, or in transit, you can set this to perform automatically as well. With my testing it can be finicky at times when I go down and sit it doesn’t even register, it actually takes maybe five minutes sometimes even 10 minutes until it kicks on. So, I just usually turn it off. I’m not a big fan of it, I just love controlling my ANC personally myself.

An equalizer is available with presets and this does help tune your audio to your liking, next is your music being played, next to that is the option to turn on or off auto-pause when you take off an earbud. If your audio is stuttering, you can lower the quality down a bit and have it more stable. It also allows you to change what the touch controls do on both the earbuds, auto power on or off which is nice. The last thing you get in the app is language changes and auto-updates for you to toggle there.

BATTERY AND ITS LIFE:

This does support fast charging so you can get a fast charge out of this. You plug it in, you’re not gonna have to wait very long because the battery in here really is not that large, to begin with. The earphones themselves are capable of seven hours of battery depending on how you’re using them, but the case itself holds another 21 hours that’s three full charges for the earphones bringing the total up to 28 hours of listening time if you charge the case to a full charge.

Obviously, that time is going to reduce depending on the features that you’re using on the earphone like active noise cancellation. For the most part, I thought it was an excellent battery life. Overall, I have no complaints about battery, I really did like the longevity that I got out of these earphones.

Sony WF-1000XM3

Sony does disclose battery performance with ANC on and off that is for 8 hours. You also get an additional three charges from the gorgeous looking case, that’s charged by USB-C. In total, you’re getting up to 24 hours of battery power. With my testing at 50% volume from full to dead, I was able to get six hours, in 23 minutes with ANC on. Quick charging is also featured with these, ten minutes on the charger gives you back ninety minutes worth of performance and to fully recharge these earphones it’s only an hour and a half, that’s really good.

SOUND:

Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2

The key feature with the Momentum True Wireless 2 earphones is sound quality. These are marketed as true wireless earbuds that sound great, that audio files are going to love and they really do sound incredible. The Pixel Buds 2 by comparison sound positively dull and hazy which I would say makes those fine for say podcasts or audiobooks.

When comparing side-by-side the Jabra Elites 75t have improved the sound over the previous iteration of that earbud and they have a low-end that’s overemphasized. When you compare it to what you get in the Sennheiser’s they sound much better than the Pixel Buds but still, it just sounds like it’s really hyping up the low-end. The Momentum True Wireless 2 earbuds are much more balanced in comparison. So, you want to get these for their sound quality. If you like listening to music with your earbuds these are the ones to get because you’re gonna get some really awesome music listening out of these.

You can make some calls with these. Probably I should mention call quality was great on my end and people on the other end actually thought I was talking directly into the phone when I was using these. So, I would say that that’s a good sign.

Sony WF-1000XM3

These microphones actually isolate a quiet voice perfectly. Hopefully, that sounded good. So, the call quality was pretty good. The WF-1000XM3 without active noise-canceling on will have okay passive noise isolation, this lets in a little more sound than most other truly wireless in general in-ear earphones. So, when I turn on ANC at first because of the difference it sounded amazing.

The active noise-canceling eliminates a lot of the airiness and ambient air around you, air conditioners in the office, cars driving, by that light breeze those are practically gone. Voices and background music for example in a coffee shop or so, though seem to be barely canceled when you’re listening to low volume music. Upper mid to high frequencies doesn’t sound to be as canceled or as suppressed much either.

It does work well but I feel as though if you’re listening to this at moderate to even high volumes, it’s a very similar experience to your own in-ear earphones that you have at home that doesn’t have ANC. I would say get them if you’re walking a lot in transit and you’re surrounded by the urban jungle basically if you’re outdoors a lot. If you’re using them more in the office, at home, essentially indoors, you might be better finding something else.

These do get loud at just 50 percent volume, it’s equal to the other earphones that I usually jam out with at around 65 to 75 percent volume. Going over bass, these are very balanced and plays it neutral in its stock settings. It’s good for general listening, but there is an equalizer within their app there. If this sounds a little too mellow for you, select a bass boost, and I’m sure this would satisfy most. You can manually change this instead of using the presets there and get real deep but retain a relatively balanced audio signature.

Sony focuses on giving a very clean experience and it doesn’t sound distorted and the mid doesn’t get muddy. It’s not aptX but the resolution could be a little bit better. Other than that the mid-range is very pronounced while sounding quite natural, and if you decide to boost it within the equalizer. The vocals in mid-range in general get brighter and more forward.

For the high frequencies they never ear piercing or screeching from my experience even at high volumes the upper end sounds to be capped off to prevent that distortion, but at the same time, the high frequencies don’t sound to be suppressed. I do wish there was a bigger soundstage on these, but stereo separation is very apparent on these and it does help with the audio immersion. Overall they sounded really great for the price in my assessment.

WHICH ONE IS WORTH BUYING?

If you are looking for earphones with the best sound quality then you can go for the Sennheiser but in my opinion, the Sony WF-1000XM3 is worth buying at their price range because they do have good ANC, their earbuds are independent and they do have better battery life than the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 2.
