Detail Review:
INTRODUCTION:
Astro A20
For everyone that wanted a less expensive but still Astro quality wireless headphone experience, the A20 wireless headphone is giving that experience.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
This one is like a great headset with amazing features that come under $100. The features and sound and everything is very nice in this headset, especially for the price.
DESIGN:
Astro A20
They have that Astro quality of the build. You can get a good look here that matte black finish and that classic design. You can see the little green or blue on the inside.
It features the same great Astro build quality that all their headphones are known for which is amazing because this particular headphone the wireless A20 only cost 149 dollars but you’re still getting that great quality build.
There are some differences with this one and its bigger version A50. There’s a slight design ethic difference as great as durable as A50 is. A50 has a little bit of better build quality to them only because you have the aluminum piping. The build quality is going to be a little better on A50 and of course, wouldn’t you expect a 150 dollar headphone versus a 300 dollar headphone.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
The first thing I want to point them out about the headset this be in the ps4, it has the blue accents and if you have the Xbox one, it’s going to be green.
There’s a huge gap here when you wear them and again the reason for this is VR. Companies are now designing their products to be able to work with VR.
Turtle Beach is right across the top, branding is pretty minimal. I mean, you see the little Turtle Beach logo on each side but it’s not obnoxious and again, you can see it in the ear cups.
COMFORT:
Astro A20
When I hold it first, they’re nice and light. I think when you when you get a wireless headphone, you worried that all the technology has to be built in the wireless receiver and everything that goes along with that, you’re worried about it weighing down the headphones. These are not heavy at all, these are nice and light.
It has the slider adjustment. You can see how the slider sort of works up and down, works pretty smoothly, a little rubberized insert on the headband here that’s very comfortable or feels very comfortable.
These are really comfortable and very adjustable. You can have the greatest headphone in the world with all the greatest features you could ever want but if it isn’t comfortable, you’re not going to wear it long enough to appreciate all those features. So, comfort is something that Astro also puts right up there with their legendary sound quality.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
The cool thing about these is they weigh nothing but yet even though they weigh nothing, you have very thick soft padding at the top. The ear cups are extremely soft, these are the same ones that were on the stealth 400 wireless model. This is the one that’s here to replace those Stealth 400.
There are adjustments that go straight up and down. Turtle Beach also made it where in the middle part of these of the earpads, it’s really soft. Now that’s for people who have glasses so that when you’re wearing them, it’s so soft that it’s not adding pressure to the side of your head.
Overall comfort, these are pretty breathable. You can leave them on for long periods of time and it doesn’t get hot and it doesn’t get warm.
FEATURES:
Astro A20
There are some general features in the A20 headset. The flip-up mic to boom mic that’ll mute it and of course, the equalizer the EQ that allows you to do preset EQ and it allows you to balance the chat between game chat and voice chat. These all may be normal for Astro headphones but that’s not normal for all the other headphones, these are features that are only normal if you’re used to getting Astro headphones. These are things that Astro puts in all their new headphones that the competitors still haven’t caught up with. So, I love the fact that Astro sort of was downplaying all the really cool features that you don’t really get other headphones.
You have the boom mic that flips up to mute. You have the EQ, you can also use Astros command center which will allow you to really customize the sound and it’ll even allow you to customize the microphone input. So, people are having trouble hearing you or if they’re hearing you too loudly, you can adjust the volume they’re all through software.
There are two different versions of the Astro A20 wireless headphones. There’s one that is meant for the PlayStation 4 and there’s one that is meant for the Xbox One. The nice thing is regardless of which model you get the one designed for the PlayStation 4 or the Xbox One, both of those models are going to be compatible with PC and Mac as well. So, these can be headphones for your home console and your computer at the same time. There are two cables in the box, micro USB cables, one little longer than the other.
On the side of the ear cup, there’s a master volume control, there’s a little roller wheel on the bottom corner that controls the master volume of the headphone. You’ll see a little rocker around either side of the master volume switch and that rocker will allow you to balance the audio when you’re gaming. If you want to hear more if you’re playing online and you want to hear more of the chat, you can press the button to go more towards chat. If you want to hear more in-game sounds and in-game volume, you can hit that as well. So, that’s another one of the things that an Astro does that they think is normal but it’s not normal, it’s a really cool feature and something that all Astro headphones now have.
There is little rocker switch is to adjust chat versus game audio. You’ll see two buttons here on the side and it looks like a little LED light, one of them on the top is for power and the one right below is actually to adjust the different pre-done EQ that they have. They have a few settings that you can choose from at the beginning to sort of adjusting the sound to your liking but again, you can go into their software a command center and fully audio however you like but it’s nicer they have some preset EQ as well. In terms of the buttons that is pretty much it.
There is something that makes all the magic happen in terms of the wireless experience and that is the little base here. The base station is so small and tiny little piece. You have a little toggle switch on this and that toggle switch will allow you to switch it between PC mode and Xbox mode depending on how you’re using it. Then in the middle, there is a classic USB port and that actually is going to allow you to plug the USB cable into this and then charge your A20 headphones.
Then, in the base station, you have an optical port, digital audio port, or optical audio port right there and that’s gonna get the sound from your Xbox into the module and then send it to your A20 wireless headphone. On the very back, you will see a micro USB input. There’s gonna be a typical again a USB cable from your Xbox that goes into the micro USB input here that will give this whole unit power. So, that should pretty much explain how the Box works and all the cables are included.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
It is a wireless headset, it is under $100. This particular model works with the ps4 and your PC, they also make an Xbox one model and I’m going to assume that they both sound and work the same.
Normally with the accessories, it’s pretty minimal and in this particular headset, you don’t get a wired option. So, you just get the wireless USB dongle. Now this plug straight into your ps4, it does not take the optical cable this time, all you got to do is just plug it straight in. Unlike other headsets in the past you’re not going to be able to use this one with your mobile devices as well, it’s just PC and just your console.
You have your volume control for the game and audio on the top and then your mic control on the bottom. Controls are pretty simple. On your left-hand side which is where your microphone is and that is where your controls are and that is where your power button and your mode button. I felt like if there were actual physical buttons over on the headphone it would have been better because these are kind of hard when you have them on your head to be able to feel which one that you’re hitting.
Now, the modes that you get they have a signature sound mode, bass boost mode, and they have a bass and treble boost mode but if you just have the power button while you’re using it, it will turn it on to superhuman hearing mode.
MICROPHONE:
Astro A20
The microphone has a little plastic cover and the microphone is nice and flexible. Now on the side, there is a little red tab. It obviously gets the job done but the mic volume is not great. I wish the mic sound bit louder. The mic is long enough to get to your mouth.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
On the edge, they have the microphone. Now, the microphone is non-removable but the way that it folds back and these stick up pretty far.
Once you push it down the mic, it turns on and once you get it up, you’ll hear a beeping noise it will mute the microphone. Now, this is where you can hear yourself in the microphone itself. This does have the mic monitoring, so you hear your own voice and how loud you are and it gives better awareness of things that are going on.
Overall mic quality, I think sounds really good for a wireless headset that’s under a hundred dollars. I found that most wireless headsets seem to lack in mic quality and Turtle Beach designed this which sticks back pretty far. It keeps from hearing the popping sound, so it’s not right in front of your mouth and picking that up. Also, it keeps from hearing a lot of the “S” sounds, if you’re used to gaming you’ll hear and other people’s microphones. Overall for $99 and a wireless headset, it’s really hard to top the mic that’s on the Turtle Beach Stealth 600.
BATTERY:
Astro A20
It also promises 15 hours of battery life which is a really big deal because if the battery runs out to you quickly, you don’t want to have to stop your gaming experience to go plug it in and wait for it to charge. 15 hours of gameplay should be plenty for all of you. You have to charge the A20 through this little box which base station and the micro USB cable.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
You get the micro USB to a USB charger for your headset itself but the headset gets about 15 hours of battery life which is really impressive for this headset.
SOUND:
Astro A20
Sound quality is excellent but really would you expect anything less from Astro. I’m just blown away, you get the great sound quality, great build, all the great features for pretty much half the price of the A50.
In terms of the sound, you’re still getting great sound on the A20, just a little bit different build quality on this one. There’s just a little bit different technology, build a little bit fancier on the A50.
Turtle Beach Stealth 600
I do think that for some reason the volume on these could be a lot louder. It will get into the sound overall and what it all sounds like but the volume I just felt like could be some notches louder and maybe it’s just fine for just you but I do need to point that out.
In superhuman hearing People that do a lot of online gaming or even people that do like competitive gaming that amps up your mids and your treble so much where you can hear footsteps. It really is made just to focus on being able to sound whore and hear people in different directions as to where like bass and treble boost mode is more just for like explosions and stuff like that. So, there are different modes and they do each sound pretty different, so they all have their own use.
I personally like the bass and treble boost mode and it sounded great for games and sounded absolutely amazing for music. I do want to point that out because I do listen to music on my PC and these right here just all sound alone. For $100, I was surprised at how incredible music sounded, and again I wish it were louder. I am not saying that these aren’t loud, I just think I at least like to have the option to raise the volume.
I do want to point out that in trouble and bass boost mode, the treble is boosted enough and vocals sound really good, a lot of the other sounds and games sound really good but the bass is there to be able to add some excitement, some punch into the sound. So, that explosions sound like they’re happening right there with you and you’re starting to feel a little more that’s in the game. Most gaming headsets that have a flat sound signature or the gaming headsets that have bass boosted signatures seem to lack everything else. So, Turtle Beach has a really good balanced blend so that if you want a treble boost, you can also boost your bass, and then it gives you a more balanced sound.
WHICH TO BUY?
To take the decision which to buy or which to choose is quite difficult here because both these are mid-range headset with nice features. Both the headsets have good sound quality. If you want a headset just for gaming, you should choose Astro A20 or if you want to use these for consoles PC and also other gaming then I think Turtle Beach Stealth 600 will be good enough.
