INTRODUCTION:

Blue Mix-Fi

These high fidelity headphones feature 50-millimeter fiber-reinforced dynamic drivers. They have a built-in all-analog audio file amplifier with passive active and enhanced based modes. Blue implemented a multi-jointed design with an adjustable tension knob for the headband and ear-shaped ear cups for greater comfort. It reported 12 hours of battery life.

Blue Sadie

The goal with these headphones was kind of a next-generation audio solution for mobile, for laptops, for people who just love music. What makes the Sadie headphones different is they have a built-in amp, that is custom matched with the 50-millimeter drivers that give you rich flows and bright clear highs.

DESIGN:

Blue Mix-Fi

The headband of Mix-Fi is different than any headband on any other headphone. Instead of the traditional rounded headband design, blue opted for a slightly rounded top portion, then transitions to the sides using the sophisticated hinge mechanism. The tension of the hinges is controlled by the knob on the back of the headband.

In the ear cups, there is another hinge that adjusts the length of the headphones. The well-padded ear cups are ear-shaped and large which are more comfortable. The combination of matte gray, the shiny accents, the logo, and, a brushed aluminum top are really attractive and it’s a cool looking set of headphones. There are no exposed wires that can be caught on anything. The left and right channel indicators are also not there.

At the bottom of the left ear cup, there is a micro USB port and a 2.5-millimeter input that’s used with the two included cables. Mix-Fi uses a proprietary cable that isn’t locking but it’s elongated on the one end to provide a more secure connection to the ear cup. Some people don’t like the idea of a proprietary cable because it’s not as easy to replace. Also, at the bottom of the left ear cup is a toggle for the internal analog amplifier and there are options for off, on, and, on plus. The mix-fi do not have any type of active noise cancellation but because of the design and the ample padding on the ear cups, they do tend to passively isolate very well. They have a very unique look and they’re kind of big and heavy.

In the build quality, they have very unique styling. These are definitely a distinct pair of headphones that look a lot different than other pairs of headphones. They are closed-back, which means they are a great pair of headphones if you’re listening around other people. Open-back headphones, of course, have tons of sound light leak, and so having the closed-back not only has to do with how they sound but it’s also good in case you want to listen to a movie or music or something around the house other people around and you want that privacy.

According to blue, this styling was actually modeled after a Formula One race car, which you can definitely see in the unique articulating design. Lots of custom movement, so that you can get the perfect fit when you’re wearing these.

COMFORT:

Blue Mix-Fi

The mix-fi adjusts differently than any other pair of headphones. There are a lot of moving parts there and that translates to an overall more customizable fit. The tension toggle at the back of the headband is nice to have. Because the ear cups rotate the length adjustment, it also controls where the headband is positioned on the head, and due to this, you can wear this headband farther forward than with other headphones.

The ear cups are awesome they are large and easily fit over on ears and there is a ton of padding. If you wear these until the battery runs out your ears will never be overheated and you will never felt fatigued from the pressure. You should not wear these headphones around your neck because the metal is going to dig into the sides of your neck. These headphones are big and they’re heavy weighing in and over a pound. If you sit normally and listen to them while working or just hanging out, you won’t really feel the additional weight but, if you will look down or up you would definitely feel these pulling on your neck. So, you may experience some fatigue thereafter long wear.

There’s a lot of padding at the bottom of the headband. So, you will never felt any discomfort on the top of the head while wearing them, which is surprising given this weight. Looking at the weight and holding them, you will definitely think that they aren’t going to be very comfortable, but when you’ll put them on and wore them for almost 10 hours and they will outstandingly comfortable.

Blue Sadie

The ear cups feel phenomenal with very luxurious memory foam. On the bottom of the left ear cup, there is a micro USB port, so that you can charge the headphone amp. Also, you have the audio jack as well as a custom dial to turn the amp, either have it off or in passive mode, or have it in the other two modes with the amp on. These are a little bit larger and bulkier than most and they come in at almost one pound four hundred and forty-four grams. However, they are still very comfortable and great for long listening sessions because of the micro-adjustments, and the foam, and, the overall fit.

Blue Mix-Fi

The first thing which is highlighted is the box which is much bigger than those of other headphones. In the large box, there are headphones and set a protective heavy-duty care bag. Once you remove the headphones, there is a short cable with a mic and remote and, then a longer cable that’s intended for home office or studio use. There’s also a micro USB cable that’s used for charging. There is a charging adapter, a two-prong airplane connector, and, a 3.5 to the quarter-inch adapter. The good point about this is that this carry case has an internal pocket so, that you can keep all the additional accessories together without worrying about them scratching or damaging the headphones.

The blue estimates 12 hours of battery life with medium volume levels which is kind of low. It’s a little strange to even be discussing battery life with wired headphones but the internal amplifier does need to be powered. They have a built-in 1020 million per hour battery, which fully charges in about three and a half hours and no one should really listen to them, while they’re being charged.

There is a power-saving feature that automatically turns these headphones off when you take them off your head. Most people will definitely like this feature because most people never remember to turn headphones off and are always just wasting and running out of battery.

In the box with headphones, there is a shorter mobile cable that has an inline microphone with controls. There is also a longer cable, which you will like to use especially when you will listen off of your audio interface. It has a custom eighth-inch to quarter-inch plug. It has very nice cables and styles. You get all of the manuals and whatnot. A charging cable, for charging the amp that’s inside of the headphones, and then a really nice bag to keep the headphones well-protected and to organize all of the accessories.

The great thing about the sound is actually, listening and watching movies with these headphones. They perform incredibly and it’s like having a hi-fi surround sound system on the head. While watching movies, you have to turn up the vocal scenes, turn down the action scenes, because the overall mix just kind of sometimes seems all over the place. So, these with the amp on, is just a perfect experience throughout the whole film, especially if the film has a great soundtrack, great audio. Definitely, something you should try out sometime.

It takes 3 to 4 hours to charge, and then you get 12 hours of playtime, and when the amp turns on, you will actually see that the blue logo there, and the LED light behind lights up. The really awesome thing about this headphone is that whenever the cups touch, meaning when you take them off, it powers down on its own which is huge, because pretty much most people always leave the amp on, not remembering to turn it off. So that way it serves the battery life and you can get about 12 hours of total playback time, but that’s going to depend as it varies based on your listening volume. As far as sound goes these are not mega bass headphones.

SOUND:

Blue Mix-Fi

There are three settings for the analog, amplifier off is used for passive listening that’s best used with an external headphone amplifier or with high output audio gear. The On setting engages the Mix-Fi amplifier and it delivers a noticeably fuller sound with the increased dynamic range. The On Plus setting activates the amplifier’s analog low-frequency enhancement circuit which then delivers really nice amount of additional deep bass. As far as a sound profile in the On mode, which powers on the internal amplifier that makes, if you have a very even bass response, you’ll immediately notice an increase in volume and in fact remember to turn the volume down before you start or you’ll be sorry for listening to these with the volume turned all the way up in the On mode.

Along with the rich and even bass, you’ll also notice that the mids are robust and the highs are incredibly detailed. These are definitely great sounding headphones. The sound is crisp and accurate and, with higher volume, the highs might be a tad brighter than some purists out there might want but, they never really became overly harsh. There is no digital signal-processing happening there it is all analog. If you’re looking for more bass than the mix-fi offers the On+ mode which engages the amplifier’s analog low-frequency enhancement circuit. This isn’t an overwhelming increase in bass but more of an additional layer of depth in the lows and the mid loads.

There are 50-millimeter drivers inside of the headphones. It has three listening modes, the passive mode, which just means that the amp is off, and it really doesn’t mean off, because even if the batteries died in passive mode, it can be used as regular headphones and they sound great in that mode. They would just be being powered by whatever device you’re listening on. The second mode is the On mode and now that is what the amp turned on. The third mode is On+, and that is for the enhanced bass response, it actually is great for music where you want the bass pulled out but they also did that to enhance the lows of a lot of vinyl era music, and also for just vinyl itself.

One thing to note is that they actually have a warning in the box to make sure you turn your gain down a lot before you turn the amp on, because it brings a lot of power and a lot of volumes, but it doesn’t really stop there. Once you turn the amp on, you get a huge boost to the sound stage and dynamic range overall. When you turn the amp on, you get more brightness and definition in the highs, and then the bass seems a little bit more substantial as well.

The good thing about this is that there is no distortion at any reasonable listening volumes. With the amp on, if you turned your device all the way up, eventually you could get them to distort. But any reasonable listening volumes, even if you listen to your music very loud with very intense songs that move more into a lot happening, even a little bit in the EDM genre, where there’s maybe a ton of things happening, they handle insane. Things stay clear, no distortion, ultra-clean, pretty impressive.

One last thing to note about the sound quality is that you could use these for reference headphones, but that’s not really what they are intended to do. They’re definitely meant for listening to music, a full audio experience, but because they have some nuances in the brightness, in the highs and the mids they’re not really flat, neutral headphones that you would probably use like reference monitors. So that’s something to consider. They could be used for that mixing and some other things, but again if someone is looking purely for reference headphones, they might want to check out something else.

WHICH TO BUY?

Blue Mix-Fi and Blue Sadie both have different sound quality, but both have three modes of listening. Both have 12 hours of playtime. Both are heavier and bulkier for the head but still comfortable. Both feature 50-millimeter fiber-reinforced dynamic drivers. When it comes to sound quality and comfort both are definitely worth it. The price gap of both headphones is huge. These are wired headphones, so they may not appeal to someone who is looking for a portable wireless headphone.

If you want mega bass and you definitely want tons of hip-hop in EDM with that full bass response, Blue Sadie is probably not the headphones to go after. For bass and a full soundstage, you should go for Blue Mix-Fi, they are a really good option. On vocal focus track, this performs beautifully. They allowed the crisp high mids to stay out in front of the mix and the overall sound was dynamic and balanced. If what you’re looking for is something that’s just over-the-top booming, Blue Mix-Fi isn’t what you’re looking for.
