Detail Review:
INTRODUCTION:
Bose Portable Home Speaker
This is the first portable smart speaker from Bose called if you can believe it, the Bose Portable Home Speaker. Bose already has some pretty well-reviewed, compact, smart home speakers on the market with the 300 and 500, but they didn’t have a portable option. And that’s where this one comes in. And it does a great job.
Sonos Move
The Sonos Move is the Sonos first portable speaker and delivers an impressively big sound. This speaker is retailing for a premium price of around four hundred dollars currently on Amazon. You may think this has a premium price tag but it worth that price tag with its performance and features.
DESIGN:
Bose Portable Home Speaker
The design might look a little familiar as it’s close in style to the Revolve+, but this one’s a little bigger, and the sound is better, but it’s about 50 dollars more expensive. What you get for that extra cost are starting off is the smart speaker capabilities. This one will work hands-free with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa as long as you’re on Wi-Fi.
If you’re in a spot where you’re not getting Wi-Fi though, you can still use the Bluetooth feature to playback audio. And that Bluetooth button is located on the top with all the other physical buttons for power, volume, action, and turning the microphones on and off. Around those, you’ll see some perforations for those built-in microphones that are used for the smart assistants. And they do pick up your voice pretty well, even when there’s music playing.
Sonos Move
It’s a little larger than what you may expect from a portable speaker the Sonos Move sits at around 10 inches tall and weighs in at 6 pounds. It’s not the kind of portable you just throw in your backpack to take hiking, it’s probably more suited for the backyard. Although, the integrated ergonomic handle on the back does make it a little easier to just grab and go. Even its refined design makes it look more like an indoor speaker with a nice almost black matte finish and grille combo.
I love the tall oval shape, which gives it a slicker look than your typical blocky rectangular speaker, especially if you go for the lunar white color option. The grille wraps around the speaker with the lower fifth and rubberized plastic keeping things very clean. Around the back, you’ll find the power button, a button to toggle wi-fi or Bluetooth, and a third to connect to other Sonos speakers. On top of the speaker, you’ll find the media touch-sensitive controls to play and pause as well as two buttons for volume control on either side. There’s also a small led status light but it’s not bright enough to illuminate the buttons if you need to control your media in the dark.
FEATURES:
Bose Portable Home Speaker
It’s a really full-sounding speaker that offers a soundstage that’s quite a bit wider than the size of the speaker might suggest Which is important because of one thing it can’t do, stereo pair. And who knows, that may change in the future through an update, but currently, you don’t have that option. You can integrate it into a system with other speakers that work off the Bose Music App though, like the Home speaker 300 and 500, or the Soundbar 500 and 700. So it’s great to use around the home with the speakers I just mentioned, on Wi-Fi, but what about when you wanna take it to an area without any Wi-Fi, like out in your yard or even to the pool or to the beach.
You get a battery that Bose actually claims, even at higher volumes, will give you 12 hours of playback. Honestly, I’d be happy with 8 hours on a speaker that sounds this good. And for charging, it comes with a USB Type-C cable and power brick or there’s a cradle you can purchase separately that makes the charging process even easier. And it’s pretty durable, too. It’s IPX4 rated so it can stand to be splashed if it’s by a sink or even left out in the rain.
The materials they use can handle some bumps and bruises. You do get a comfortable, fabric-covered handle across the top that makes it easy to carry, and although it’s bigger than the Revolve+, it’s not that big. It’s just over 7.5″ high and a little over 4″ in diameter. And it weighs slightly under 2.5 pounds so it’s not all that heavy either. The size, portability, smart features, and most importantly, sound quality, all add up to this being one of the best speakers on the market right now.
Sonos Move
It’s a little odd that they didn’t go with the traditional plus and minus icons for volume controls. Why they went with the identical icons for both volumes up and down, can be a bit confusing. If you’re curious, why there’s no song skip or previous song button you’ll love this. All you have to do is swipe across all three icons to the right or left to skip the song or return to the previous song. I also love how the speaker sits on its charging dock. The dock is actually a stylish ring for a more permanent charging solution but you can also use its USB-C port for charging on the go.
On a full charge, you’ll enjoy up to about 11 hours of playback at moderate volume levels but it is a little disappointing that they didn’t include a 3.5-millimeter line-in. With automatic true play, built-in support for Google Assistant and Alexa, wide music service compatibility, Spotify Connect, AirPlay 2, amazing battery performance, and with both Wi-fi and Bluetooth connectivity options, it’s definitely a great splurge option, especially if you have other Sonos speakers. It may not be as portable given its hefty size but it is still portable and for those that make the effort you’ll enjoy incredible premium sound wherever you are.
SOUND QUALITY:
Bose Portable Home Speaker
As far as the sound quality, this one gets a significant bump over the Revolve+. Bose doesn’t really give us numbers to associate with that increase, but you can tell right away when you hear it. And just like the 300 and 500, you also get 360 degrees sound so you can hear it clearly no matter where you place it in the room. Overall sound quality is not to the same level as the Home Speaker 300 or 500, but it’s closer to the 300 than it is to the Revolve+. I really like the punch you get from the bass. It’s not earth-shaking, but it’s there when it’s supposed to be. Highs carry well and the warmth of the mids pulls everything together.
Sonos Move
With both Wi-fi and Bluetooth and up to 11 hours of continuous playback, the Sonos Move delivers loud and punchy sound making it possibly one of the best portable speakers around especially when you consider that it’s weatherproof and drop resistant. When it comes to the audio performance of the Sonos Move, it doesn’t deviate from Sonos’s stellar track record for amazing sounds. This model features their first speaker with automatic true play, which calibrates the audio output depending on your environment. So, whether you’re in the backyard or living room you’ll always get a balanced audio experience. You’ll find the sound is rich and robust with deep bass and a wide soundscape that sounds quite substantial both indoors and outdoors.
WHICH ONE IS WORTH BUYING?
In my opinion, the Sonos Move is worth buying than the Bose Portable Home Speaker even though it has a higher price range because it fulfills the most important thing that you would expect from a speaker that is the sound. The Sonos Move sounds better than the Portable Home Speaker and also, it is durable than the Portable Home Speaker.
