INTRODUCTION: 

Bowers & Wilkins PX7

The Bowers & Wilkins PX7 is one of the popular headphones in the market for noise-cancellation among some popular headphones like Sony WH-1000XM3 and Bose Noise Cancelling 700. This headphone is also one of the premium headphones in the market as it is retailing for around three hundred and ninety-nine dollars on Amazon.

The Bowers & Wilkins PX is the first headphone in the PX series headphones from the Bowers & Wilkins. This headphone also features noise-cancellation as like the other headphones from the same series. This headphone is retailing for around two hundred and ninety dollars currently on Amazon which is lesser compared to the PX7.

DESIGN:

The design looks as good as the previous generation in my personal opinion. Besides using a lot of plastics that a lot of other headphone users or headphone companies use, this has fabric up top and surrounding the ear cup, and at the very back of the ear cup, you have a very nice matte finish with the Bowers & Wilkins logo flexing here in this reflective metal. The arms have a carbon composite material, and it looks sick.

On the left ear cup, there is the active noise-canceling button to toggle between low, high, off, and auto. Holding it down will turn on transparency mode which allows you to eliminate passive noise isolation as the microphones will pump in your environmental audio. On the right ear cup, pause-play, skipping, and going back on music, volume controls are also there, there’s a 3.5-millimeter port for physical connections, and there’s USB-C for charging but you can also use this for audio as well.

At the right ear cup is where you have got all the buttons and the ports, and so you will a USB Type-C port which is very nice to see in a pair of headphones, then you will find the headphone port, a little slider switch for the power and also to enter Bluetooth pairing mode, then you have a button for the active noise cancellation, and then you have the volume and playback controls with the middle button having a little hump in it so you’ll be able to easily identify where your fingers are. I found that using the buttons on these headphones was very convenient, unlike some other headphones where I’m able to easily identify what I’m trying to press and I find myself making very few mistakes in hitting the right button.

Another thing with the design that I like is that the ear cups are magnetic, so you can take them on and off this would be good if you’re trying to get in there and maybe clean some dirt and other stuff out. Also, if you managed to damage these and scratch them up or tear them, you’d be able to easily just replace them. When you take off the ear cups, you’re able to notice one thing that’s nice is that these speakers are angled, so they’re gonna be able to push that audio into your ear a little bit more directly and that’s gonna be able to make for an even better audio experience and having something that’s completely flat.

COMFORT:

If you have the question does the materials help make the PX7 lighter than the previous generation yes, indeed it does have the ear cups improved over the last generation, indeed it has as well how do they feel compared to other headphones on the market against the competitors? Although these are 310 grams per Bowers and Wilkins they don’t feel heavy but compared to Sony and Bose which were around 250 grams, the PX7 feels a little bit more neutral while these two other competitors just feel a little bit airier. I personally prefer the lightness on the other headphones but the design on the PX7 I feel is good enough for most people.

As far as the overall comfort level of these headphones, it’s pretty good. The ear cups aren’t as pillowy I guess as other headphones, it’s a little bit stiffer but doesn’t mean that they hurt your ears but they do create a very tight seal around them. Just over the past couple of weeks from my first time using them, I found that they have been able to soften up just a little bit, so they are really comfortable. Then the only issue I probably have is with the headband itself because these headphones have a little bit of weight I feel a little pressure to talk to my head, after using these headphones for about two hours straight while watching a movie. But other than that, these are a very nice pair of headphones. The ear cups make a very nice seal around the ears and so that helps with isolating the audio and also too with the active noise cancellation.

When you don’t need passive or active noise canceling, you can turn on the transparency mode on this headphone and this feature in these headphones is an amazing experience. It sounds natural for the most part but if I am talking though I can hear myself and it sounds quite hollow which was a little bit funky but on that listening to your surroundings top match.

As far as the performance of the active noise-canceling, there is ever-so-slight airplane cabin pressure, it’s very minimal but it is present though, no hissing or what noise experience but for the performance the active noise-canceling performance the PX7 can compete with the best of the best out there, it was loud with music going on and this isolates your music really well. When I tested this just walking around on the road, a lot of cars driving behind me but this canceled out the background noise to a great degree.

There is an awesome feature in this headphone called a wear sensor, similar to the Sennheiser PXC 550. When you lift up either ear cup, your music will pause and when you put the ear cups back on, the music resumes. You can always turn this feature on and off within the app. As far as the app, it’s been hit or miss for me for some reason. With my Pixel 4XL oddly the app somedays can’t find my headphones, I would have to remove the headphones and then re-add them, and then within several minutes, the headphones will not connect once again. In the beginning, initially, it works perfectly fine but afterward, after about a couple of days, it started acting a little funky. The app is clean and it looks nice but it offers straightforward changes to your ANC settings and audio pass-through levels, and such but there’s no equalizer or audio profiles offered.

One of the nice things about these headphones is that they do support Qualcomm’s aptX HD which means that you’re going to be able to get some of the best audio quality when you’re streaming music over Bluetooth to these headphones. It’s a technology that’s not in every single device, there are only certain phones that do support it like the OnePlus 5T and also the LG G5, G6, and also the LG B30. If you do own a pair of devices that do support this technology, you’re gonna be able to get a really great streaming experience over Bluetooth.

One thing I like just as much as the audio coming from these headphones is the look of these headphones. They look very stylish and I like little things like the textures that they have, their material on the top of the headband, and also too on the outer of the ear cups. It feels really good especially you rub your fingers across it has a few ridges in there, so it feels excellent. Also, to these headphones, I have a little bit of weight to them so it feels very premium, and it feels very solid.

Even when just stretching them out a little bit they don’t feel like they’re gonna break easily, you don’t hear any creaks or anything like that coming from their material. Then I also not been able to see the wire come up from each one of the ear cups into the headbands, and I normally don’t like being able to see the branding on each one of the ear cups as prominent as they are on these headphones but for some reason they do work. They were able to make a pair of headphones that stand out but aren’t too flashy and I like the colors that they come in, so you really can’t go wrong with either one.

As far as the noise cancellation on these headphones it is really good and I was able to use these on the planes and I didn’t find any issue with hearing too much of the airplane noise that you normally get from people with just an engine, and this is also able to really block out all at that. I like that the application that you can download for iOS and Android does give you some control over the noise cancellation. You can choose modes such as office, city, and flight from the environment filter to get the ambient sound based on the place you are at. When you do have these headphones on your head and you want to hear somebody that’s talking to you, you can just lift up the ear cup to pause the music, and then once you let it go and place it back on your head, it is going to start playing the music again as this has the wear sensor feature in it. This just takes a second or two which I would like to see a little bit more instant to play and pause.

MICROPHONE:

I tested out the microphone sound quality on this headphone, it does sound pretty good, and it isolates the voice with what is going on in the background currently at the moment. There is a very slight breeze going on while talking. Hopefully, it does sound pretty good for the price. Also, when I tested this on phone calls, it does play through both ear cups that’s a good thing. ANC basically remain on while on a phone call, you can always manually switch it to either passive noise isolation or basically transparency mode manually with the button on the left ear cup by yourself.

The microphone on the Bowers & Wilkins PX sounds pretty good and performs its function of letting in the ambient noise pretty well. I tested out the microphone quality on this headphone by doing a phone call by this headphone and it sounds pretty good for me as well as to the person on the other side.

BATTERY:

As far as the battery life on this, Bowers and Wilkens provide up to 30 hours of use with active noise-canceling on, with my testing I’m able to achieve 31 hours and 14 minutes worth of real-world use. With the same test, I got 22 hours and 48 minutes on the Bose 700 and in Sony WH-1000 XM3 I had 20 hours and 8 minutes. The Bowers and Wilkins did better by around 10 hours in addition. There’s also fast charging, 15 minutes plugged in from a dead battery will give you back 5 hours of audio, which’s also really good.

As far as the battery life on this headphone, you can get up to twenty-two hours with the Bluetooth and ANC on, you can get up to twenty-nine hours with Bluetooth and no ANC, you can get up to thirty-three hours with ANC and wired connection, and you can get up to fifty hours of playback with the wired connection and no ANC as the company claims.

SOUND:

These do get loud, I’m usually listening to these at about 60 to 65% volume along with Bluetooth 5.0 these headphones also support aptX HD high-resolution audio files. If you’re a big specs person, Sony indeed has an LDAC for the best in high-resolution audio files at the moment but the PX7 has just enough bass for me, it’s fast, it’s light, it’s punchy here. I could use a little bit more to warm up some vocals on pop music or further immerse myself with hip-hop and EDM tracks.

The Bowers and Wilkins PX is a pair of wireless headphones that will definitely blow you away. One thing that you want from a great pair of headphones is great audio quality and these do deliver on that, and compared to some of the other bests on the market I find that these have the best soundstage in my opinion. Also, the bass is really tight and punchy, and it has a little kick to it. I’d like to listen to a lot of bass-heavy music like hip-hop, so I’m able to put these on and I really enjoy the bass, I’m able to get my hand on the back and forth but it does a good job at being well balanced, and it’s not drowning anything else out. That’s really the best way to describe the sound coming from these headphones very well balanced and even if you turned the volume all the way up to max everything remains clean and undistorted.

WHICH TO BUY?

I’m not an audiophile but I do use headphones a lot especially in my travels and I find that the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 really hit on a lot of things that I personally like. It has a really good style, great audio quality, and those couple of unique features that really make them useful in my usage with them. As this headphone comes at 399 dollars these are a pair of premium headphones if you are looking for a premium experience and these do deliver on that. I find that you really can’t go wrong with these if you’re looking for a pair of headphones that have great audio quality and just look great themselves.
