INTRODUCTION:

Razer Basilisk

Razer has been consistently innovating in the gaming space and today we’re going to compare one of the innovative mouse, the Razer Basilisk gaming mouse. It has some decent features with a good budget price range.

Razer Viper

This mouse has the major ergonomic change from all the other Razer mice. This mouse is considered redesigned. Other than that, the features and functions are quite similar.

Viper is a direct result of collaborations between their engineering team and the team Razer eSports gamers. They would get direct feedback and contributions on what they want in a mouse for professional gaming use. So, this was directly designed for eSports.

DESIGN:

Razer Basilisk

Upon first glance, you’d assume that the Razer Basilisk is a typical gaming mouse. But upon further examination, it has a few distinct differences. The top ad some of the sides of the surfaces have a matte-black, soft finish.

Due to the comfort, gamers can play for 8+ hours or more using this device. One aspect that sets it apart from the competition is the drop off on the right side. For some users, this allows them to ergonomically maneuver with the mouse. Seeing as though the mouse weighs in at 107 grams, Razer possibly removed the right side to save weight. The scroll wheel lights up on the edges which creates a beautiful appearance when its coupled with the Chroma lighting.

Razer Viper

Taking a look at it, we have a very nice and simple looking ambidextrous 69-gram with a new 16,000 dpi, 5g optical sensor. I really like how they were able to shed a bunch of weight here without following the latest trend of having holes in it. We’ve seen that a lot lately and they went in a different direction which is something that I can applaud. If we’re a closer look when you weigh it on a scale, it comes in at 70 grams with a bit of the cable on the scale itself but technically so 69 grams without the cable and shedding its top shell the interior support weighs 46 grams, with the bottom base accounting for 26 of those grams. So, it can really just get a better idea of the way to break down here.

They constructed a new combination of plastics for the Viper, and I’m really impressed that the interior skeleton is just 18 grams itself. So this is essentially the interior support being so lightweight yet durable, which then means the actual top shell with the left and right clicks in the logo accounts for the other 25 grams. They did also managed to fit RGB lighting inside with the logo being illuminated, proving that you don’t need to add a bunch of extra weight because as you can see on the PCB, we have a single diode here which accounts for milligrams.

Technically speaking, it comes in at 126.7 millimeters long, 66.2 millimeters wide, and around 57 millimeters at its slimmest point in the waist and it stands 37.8 millimeters tall. So, depending on your hand size and your grip, keep those dimensions in mind but after using the Model O since release, the Viper was very easy. In dimensions wise, they aren’t worlds apart but the Model O is lighter. I was a bit wary at first of the ambidextrous design because with the buttons on the right side and as a fingertip gripper myself, I figured my right ring finger may accidentally press them in but it didn’t happen once. They positioned it nicely kind of out of the way which is definitely good.

FEATURES & PERFORMANCE:

Razer Basilisk

Under the scroll wheel are a group of buttons that allow you to adjust the DPI quickly and there’s less resistance. Not only does it take a light process to use the clutch, buts it’s easier to remain active when moving the mouse around. This increases your speed when playing games, making it easier to aim as desired.

The underside of the mouse has a few interesting features besides the 16,000 DPI optical sensor and 3 ultraslick mouse feet. With these DPI settings, you’ll have a 99.4% resolution average. So, you can play your HD games on the go. Placed on the front side of the mouse wheel is a resistance wheel adjustment dial which allows you to toggle the scroll wheel’s resistance. The higher the resistance, the slower the scrolling speed and the more “front sideclickier” sounding the wheel gets. Like most gaming mice, simply place the USB port into your computer and it’s ready to play.

Users have made positive reviews on the clutch. It’s comfortable, works well, and is smart. The mouse is magnetically held in place, so you can give your thumb extra room if you’re not using it. There were no problems with the Razer Basilisk’s performance and its adjustable DPI, 5G optical sensor, and its 1,000 Hz polling rate.

The gaming mouse has a short and long lever which can be attached to the sides. You’ll be able to adjust the position of the further, or closer to your thumb, where the button is embedded. The DPI clutch button’s purpose fits the FPS gaming completely. When its held down, it will temporarily slow down the DPI. This makes it easier to aim with your weapon during the game. After its released, the DPI shoots back to the normal rating you set it to.

Razer Viper

Now, taking a closer look at the Viper, you have your left and right-click, a nice tactile scrolling wheel, rubber textured side grips, and two buttons on each side because again it’s ambidextrous, with a dpi changing button on the bottom of the mouse and unfortunately, we just have standard Teflon mouse feet which I do think is a bit of a missed opportunity. Taking a look out there in the market with these new lightweight mice, usually, you have some sort of hyper glides or G skates as they use on the Model O but just regular feet which I think would have been a good combination with the overall lightweight designed to the mouse as well as the lightweight cable which they call Speed-Flex. So, I just wish they would have has some sort of redesigned new feet to complement all this.

As for that speed flex cable or kind of like a paracord, if you will, this is great for preventing your cable from getting hung up on the desk or snagging. With a lightweight mouse like this, you’re playing at a lower DPI that means removing your arm across a wider surface area. So having a speed flex cable is greatly gonna minimize any friction which again is just why they should have added some new feet.

We do have to the viper are these new optical switches inside for the left and right clicks. These are similar in theory to the optomechanical switches in their Huntsman keyboard lineup, meaning this is using an infrared light beam to register your clicks. The advantage something like this is eliminating any potential double clicks that sometimes happen as well as any debounce delay that happens on traditional mice with their metal contacts. Since there is no actual physical contact inside when sending a signal because again, it’s just using a light beam. Your arm return getting a mouse with more accurate clicks with no delay.

It’s something that the average consumer might not notice or pick up on but again for eSports use and pro gamers, they’re gonna be getting a mouse that is more reliable and more durable at the end which is obviously very important. So for my time with it as a gamer who is primarily an FPS gamer who’s using lower DPI is over the past year, I was always using 1200 then I cut it to 600, I tested this at 500 DPI, it felt great and probably spoiled recently from testing so many different of these lightweight mice out there, that definitely shatter my universe or anything when I first tested it out but everything using this has been very positive.

It’s a nice fit for my fingertip grip, the mouse does kind of fall on the medium side. I’d say if we’re talking size, it is smaller than the DeathAdder and the Basilisk which are two of the other mice from Razer that I have used probably the most. The Viper does have onboard storage for keeping your DPI, as well as your button remapping, saved that does not include RGB lighting.

SOFTWARE:

Razer Basilisk

Gaming mice manufacturers tend to add extra software to utilize the mouse, so does the Basilisk. In this case, Razer will suggest you install the Synapse 3 software to control the mouse’s features fully. The Lighting screen is easy to use. It allows you to set your Chroma Lighting Advanced Effects or Quick Effects via the Chroma Studio. You can adjust the Chroma’s lighting and shut it off when your mouse is idle or when the display sleeps.

The mouse is very customizable, allowing you to create different Profiles for various apps and games. So, the Razer Basilisk is easier to reach.

Razer Viper

There also software to set different things in the mouse which is called Synapse Software. The customize tab lets you remap the buttons and assign the hyper shift feature as well as assigning this mouse for the left or right-handed use. The performance tab is for adjusting the polling rate frequency and your sensitivity settings, it’s color-coded as well to be light on the bottom of the mouse.

The DPI is adjustable from 100 to 16,000, and there are only adjustable in steps of 50 DPI. Then obviously, the lighting tab for adding some chroma effects, I’m more in the camp of leading at just a static color but to each his own. Then, there is the calibration tab for adjusting your lift-off distance and tuning the sensor to your mousepad or if you get a new mouse pad, you can recalibrate it to that brand new surface.

WHICH TO BUY?

Both the mouse has almost the same features and there will be some minor changes. According to me, the only big difference is their ergonomic. So, there is only a $10 difference in the price. I think ergonomically and also feature-wise, the Basilisk also nice and good. But if you prefer a lighter mouse then you should definitely go for Razer Viper.

For $70, the Basilisk is essentially the complete package for FPS gamers. If you like this sort of mouse design, it’s hard to think of what more Razer could add to improve the experience. The 16,000 DPI optical sensor is excellent, the selection of buttons is great (especially the customizable sniper clutch), there’s RGB support, and adjustable scroll resistance. Perhaps the only thing this mouse lacks is weight adjustment, but even without that feature, it’s an excellent option.
